Letter: Dealing with thistle

Billy Joe Fudge writes:
Each year:
  1. Cut them off as low to the ground as reasonable prior to seeding.

  2. Immediately after cutting, drop a handful of salt on the top of the cut stem.
This is the Chattin Chowning method and it works without chemicals that may be damaging to the environment. Chattin always carried a 25 pound bag of salt on his bush hog and mowing machine.

Kentucky Color: Window Dressing

2024-05-21 - Great Wooded South - Photo by Billy Joe Fudge.
Billy Joe writes, "This Cardinal nest is not just window dressing. The male and female have researched, tested and revisited their assumptions for two weeks. Finally, the female started the nest, one stick or twig at a time. She weaved a treehouse in front of our eyes just 8 inches from our den window. Hopefully, I can win her trust, so she will sit on her nest and not fly when I pass near the window.

The TV is only two feet from her nest. I think she likes Fox News and the NBA playoffs!"

Letter: May isn't just for hearing loss

We posted a story on Columbia Magazine on Friday about Gov. Andy Beshear and the Kentucky Commission on the Deaf and Hard of Hearing encouraging people to learn the signs of hearing loss and to seek care during Better Hearing and Speech Month.

While the Governor's communication focused specifically on hearing loss, one of our local Speech Language Pathologists has pointed out that the awareness campaign has now evolved to include everyone who has any sort of speech, language, hearing or communication impairment.

The National Association for Hearing and Speech Action (NAHSA) announced in July of last year that "starting in 2024, May will be recognized as National Speech-Language-Hearing Month instead of Better Hearing and Speech Month." The new goal of the 50-plus-year-old campaign is to raise awareness for those who have any speech, language, hearing or communication impairments, whether that be a hearing impairment or other communication deficit (i.e. aphasia, dysarthria, language impairment, voice impairment, fluency disorder, or speech sound production impairment).

The ASHA says, "May a month of educating the public about the importance of human communication and what we can all do to prevent and address communication disorders."

Scenic Kentucky: Chained Rock

2024-05-20 - Bell Co., KY - Photo by Graham Waggener.
Overlooking the Kentucky Ridge State Forest, Pine Mountain State Resort Park was Kentucky's 'first' state park, established in 1924. Among the hiking trails in the park is the Chained Rock Trail, which leads to a large rock outcropping that looms over the small town of Pineville, KY. Local legend has it that parents used to reassure the children of Pineville that the rocks couldn't fall "because they were chained to the mountain."

According to a post at appalachianhistory.net, "the story of the chained rock spread to neighboring communities, and people started showing up in town inquiring about the whereabouts of the chained rock," which in 1933 inspired the locals to turn the folklore into reality by purchasing and installing a 3,000-pound chain that had previously been used with a steam shovel in a Pennsylvania quarry.

Language fun - two words pronounced differently

Two words teased my ears while listening to a podcast recently. The speaker's pronunciation of the following made me smile:

- Medi-te-RARE-ian (speaking about the popular Mediterranean diet), and

- EGG-Zorb (speaking of the body's ability to absorb nutrients).

Phillip Wood Coffey - Dream

Oh, there has been so many sightings of Elvis
Although hear tell he's been gone since August 1977.
But how many of us have seen David Bowie, long gone
Standing on the side of Bramlett Road in their dreams?

There he was, being a country fella - picked him right up.
Said he had fell on hard times - needed a transmission repaired.
Well I said,"don't that beat all, with all that money, needing my help."
Still you be so lowly - an Englishman - driving an old junker like me.

Thanks to community from Reliford family

By LaVerne Reliford

Thank you to everyone who has been so kind to us at Jerry's death.

Our family would like to thank everyone who sent food, donated to our Church, or maybe you sent flowers. So many of you came to Gerald's funeral to show your love and respect. We were overwhelmed at your love and appreciation for his life. Your thoughts and memories of Gerald were healing to our hearts. We especially want to thank Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home for the respect and care they showed to our family.

Again, thank you Adair County and everyone who came.
